The Sky is Falling! Meteor Showers and How to See Them - rescheduled for Dec 2019 (check back for updates)

Meteor showers are one of the most spectacular regular celestial events that don’t require any special equipment to view them. Called “shooting stars,” “falling stars,” or meteors, these spectacular streaks in the sky have been a source of wonder for millennia. This class will cover the origin and nature of meteor showers as well as the best times and ways to observe them. We’ll pay special attention to the Perseid meteor shower, which is one of the most reliable and remarkable showers this time of year. Weather permitting, we’ll plan an optional meteor shower viewing for the evening of this class.

Enjoying the Treasures of the Summer Night Sky

Join us for an exploration of the treasures of the night sky as we
discover the constellations, bright stars, planets, and deep sky objects that fill the warm summer evening skies. During a daytime class we’ll review the basic use of planispheres and star charts to find our way around the night sky and learn about some of the rich collection of objects that are visible in binoculars and small telescopes. During the evening an optional stargazing gathering will be offered for participants.

We’ll gather under the last evening skies of summer to observe the night sky and its wonders. Local astronomer Stephan Martin will give a tour of the stars and constellations of the summer sky while discussing some of their myths and the astronomical phenomena happening at this time. We may even see a few Taurid meteors cross our skies! All ages are welcome and no background in astronomy or science is required.
The Mysteries and Wonders of the Moon

Contrary to Shakespeare’s popular saying of the “inconstant moon,” the Moon has been a remarkably stable and a faithful companion for the Earth for most of its history. It’s added light to our nights, influenced ocean tides, and created essential behavioral patterns in the living natural world all around us. In this class, we’ll look at the patterns in the Moon’s movement through the sky, including phases, tidal effects, and diurnal motion, then examine its influences on the natural world and biological life, and finally explore the modern scientific understanding on the nature, origin, and structure of the moon. We’ll also learn about the wonderful array of features on the surface of the moon visible with our eyes, binoculars, and telescopes and how to best observe them. Weather permitting, we’ll go outside during each class session to practice identifying and appreciating features on the Moon with a small telescope, provided by the instructor. No science background is required, and participants are welcome to bring their own binoculars, spotting scopes, or other visual aids for the evening observing sessions.

We’ll discuss some of the myths of the constellations along with the seasonal changes in the sky at this time as well as some of the latest discoveries in astronomy and theories of the universe. All ages are welcome and no background in astronomy or science is required.

While we’re enjoying the meteor show, we’ll also explore some of the stars, constellations, and other astronomical treasures of the fall night sky. All ages are welcome and no background in astronomy or science is required.

May 22-24, The Way of the Universe: Aligning Our Lives and Our Spirituality with Cosmic Process

The results from modern science indicate that we live in a universe far richer and more wonderful than anything we could have ever imagined. These insights into the deeper nature of the cosmos have the power to transform our spirituality and our lives and re-envision ourselves as living expressions of a sacred evolving universe.

Understanding the nature of these cosmic dynamics and how to align with them can also help guide us through the immense transformations and changes currently occurring in our world, allowing us to live lives of inspiration, creativity, and fulfillment for the benefit of others and the whole.
